Concerning: The inappropriate raising of the flag of Israel (and other non-EU states) on EU buildings

Dear Sir/Madam,
Dear representatives of the European Parliament,

Yes, we have learnt that war has once again broken out between Israel and the Palestians. Another one.

In response to that, the EU (specifically: the European Commission) has raised the flag of Israel before its buildings. And has even projected the flag of Israel on the facade of the EC building in Brussels.

With this open letter, I would strongly object to this ill-advised and frankly reckless move to raise the flag of a non-EU nation, that is currently at war, on EU buildings. I find this HIGHLY inappropriate, as well as dangerously reckless.

I would strongly request the EU to NOT pick sides in a long running and unresolved conflict that does not directly involve us. After all, by picking a side in this endless war between Israelis and Palestinians, we invite their conflict to spill over into our territory and society. Thus, raising the Israeli flag on EU buildings creates a direct and immediate risk to the security of European citizens, as we import somebody else’s war and we do not know what disgruntled individuals may do who see the EU openly pick sides like this. It is realistic to predict that this will be perceived as the Western world once more ganging up on the Muslim world, with all the security
problems that will generate ...In short: It is not a smart move, but shows a rather distressing amount of naivité when it comes to the perception of the EU on the global stage. Which is why I ask you to strongly condemn the raising of the Israeli flag on EU buildings. It has no place on a European government building. Nor does any other flag of any other non-EU state.

There is also the question of hypocrisy. After all: The Commission is happy to raise the Israeli flag in response to Palestinian aggression. But when the Israeli army bombed water treatment plants during their last invasion of the Gaza strip, and when they even prevented the inhabitants of the Gaza strip from fishing along their own coast or leaving their own city (thus turning the Gaza strip into the world’s largest defacto open-air prison), or when the Israeli state violated the agreement to halt the colonization of the West Bank, did the EU then also raise the Palestinian flag? No. And that was the correct choice.

At this point, I would like to point out that Israel is a state with a long history of recorded human rights abuses. This does not excuse the Palestinians. But also does not excuse Israel. I will also point out that Israel, through the granting of inordinate defense subsidies, operates as a defacto extension of the United States in the Middle East. The truth is that Israel is an American ally, not a European one.

Please understand that the point of this letter is not to attack Israel and defend the Palestinian cause. The point of this letter is simply to urge Europe to NOT pick a side in this conflict and to ask the EP to strongly condemn the raising of foreign flags in or on EU buildings. By picking sides in somebody else’s war, we only damage the security of European society and divide our society in a conflict that is not ours.

Instead, I suggest that the EU should endeavor to act as an independent mediator between the two sides. Only by remaining cool and independent can we ever hope to
solve this endless and pointless conflict.

In the end, Europe’s priorities must come first. Not the security priorities of Israel or the complaints of the Palestinians, nor the priorities of any other country. No, for the EU, Europe must always come first.

Betreft: Het ongepast hijsen van de vlag van Israël (en ook andere niet-EU-landen) bij EU-gebouwen

Beste vertegenwoordigers van het Europees Parlement,

Ja, we hebben vernomen dat er opnieuw oorlog is uitgebroken tussen Israël en de Palestijnen. Nog een.

Als reactie daarop heeft de EU (specifiek: de Europese Commissie) de vlag van Israël voor haar gebouwen gehesen. En heeft zelfs de vlag van Israël op de gevel van het EG- gebouw in Brussel geprojecteerd.

Met deze open brief wil ik krachtig bezwaar maken tegen deze onverstandige en eerlijk gezegd roekeloze stap om de vlag van een niet-EU-land dat momenteel in oorlog is op EU-gebouwen te hijsen. Ik vind dit zé r ongepast, maar ook ongelófelijk roekeloos.

Ik zou de EU met klem willen verzoeken GEEN partij te kiezen in een langlopend en onopgelost conflict waarbij wij niet direct betrokken zijn. Door een kant te kiezen in deze
eindeloze oorlog tussen Israëli's en Palestijnen nodigen we immers uit dat hun conflict overslaat naar ons grondgebied en onze samenleving. Het hijsen van de Israë ische vlag op EU-gebouwen creëert dus een direct en onmiddellijk risico voor de veiligheid van de Europese burgers, omdat we de oorlog van iemand anders importeren en we niet weten wat ontevreden individuen kunnen doen die zien dat de EU openlijk partij kiest. Het is realistisch om te voorspellen dat dit zal worden geïnterpreteerd als nog een poging van de Westerse wereld om opnieuw de strijd aan te gaan met de moslimwereld, met alle veiligheidsproblemen van dien … Kortom: het is geen slimme zet, maar het toont een
nogal verontrustende hoeveelheid aan naïviteit als het gaat om de perceptie van de EU op het wereldtoneel. Daarom vraag ik u het hijsen van de Isra ë lische vlag op EU-gebouwen
krachtig te veroordelen. Het hoort niet thuis op een Europees overheidsgebouw. Evenmin als enige andere vlag van een andere niet-EU-staat.

Er is ook de kwestie van hypocrisie. Immers: De Commissie hijst vrolijk de Israëlische vlag als reactie op Palestijnse agressie. Maar toen het Israëlische leger tijdens hun laatste
invasie van de Gazastrook waterzuiveringsinstallaties bombardeerde, en toen zij zelfs de inwoners van de Gazastrook verhinderden langs hun eigen kust te vissen of hun eigen stad te verlaten (waardoor de Gazastrook in feitelijk de grootste openluchtgevangenis ter wereld werd veranderd), en toen de Israëlische staat de overeenkomst schond om de kolonisatie van de Westelijke Jordaanoever te stoppen, heeft de EU toen ook de Palestijnse vlag gehesen? Nee. En dat was de juiste keuze.

Op dit punt zou ik erop willen wijzen dat Israël een staat is met een lange geschiedenis van gedocumenteerde mensenrechtenschendingen. Dit is geen excuus voor de
Palestijnen. Maar excuseert Israël ook niet. Ik zal er ook op wijzen dat Israël, door de ontvangst van buitensporige defensiesubsidies feitelijk opereert als een verlengstuk van
de Verenigde Staten in het Midden-Oosten. De waarheid is dat Israël een Amerikaanse bondgenoot is, en geen Europese.

Begrijp alstublieft dat het doel van deze brief niet is om Israël aan te vallen en de Palestijnse zaak te verdedigen. Het doel van deze brief is eenvoudigweg om er bij Europa op aan te dringen GEEN partij te kiezen in dit conflict en om het EP te vragen het hijsen van buitenlandse vlaggen in of op EU-gebouwen krachtig te veroordelen. Door partij te kiezen in de oorlog van iemand anders schaden we alleen maar de veiligheid van de Europese samenleving en verdelen we onze samenleving in een conflict dat niet de onze is.

In plaats daarvan stel ik voor dat de EU moet proberen op te treden als onafhankelijke bemiddelaar tussen beide partijen. Alleen door kalm en onafhankelijk te blijven, kunnen we ooit hopen dit eindeloze en zinloze conflict op te lossen.

Uiteindelijk moeten de prioriteiten van Europa op de eerste plaats komen. Niet de veiligheidsprioriteiten van Israël of de klachten van de Palestijnen, noch de prioriteiten van enig ander land. Nee, voor de EU moet Europa altijd op de eerste plaats komen.
